The head of Chase Rapids
Chase Rapids begin just below Churchill Dam. The water level in the rapids is maintained at a moderate level by daily dam releases. The most challenging rapids in Chase are considered as sharp Class II, the difficulty falling somewhere between Class II and Class III. The first two miles bring the sharpest drop. After that, some coordination is required to avoid bumping the rocks as you manuever through the channels. If you are not comfortable with this class of water, the ranger operating the dam will truck your canoe and gear (and you) around Chase Rapids for a reasonable fee. Many paddlers will request to have just their gear transported around the rapids to prevent against wet or lost gear in the event of an upset while shooting the rapids.
