Heavy rains swell the river
September 28th was a rainy day and the pace of raindrops increased in the late afternoon as we pulled into camp at Big Brook East. Very heavy rains fell for most of the night, stopping shortly before dawn. The next morning we were shocked to see that the river had risen 20-inches overnight! This was great news. Ten miles separated us from Allagash Village and without the rain we would have been dragging the boats over gravel beds exposed by low water. Instead, we zipped into town; making the 10-mile trip in just three hours. The USGS water gauge jumped from 468 cubic-feet-per-second (cfs) to 3,300 cfs in just 24 hours!
