River Chub

A fair size river chub

Chances are you will have to catch a bunch of river chubs before landing your first trout on the Allagash. Other fish in the waterway include: togue (also called Lake Trout), brook trout and whitefish, and other typically less desirable species such as hornpout, suckers, cusk, and ten kinds of minnows that are often collectively known as "chub". Fortunately for fisherman, the natural barrier of Allagash Falls has prevented warm water species such as white perch, yellow perch, bass and pickerel from entering Allagash waters. Competition from these fish would seriously limit the present cold water fishery.
