Enjoying the warmth and glow of a campfire on Elson lake

About an hour before this photograph was taken, we came to quite a revelation. We realized that we were camping on Elson Lake and had passed through Mountaineer Lake that morning. It's not that we had been lost, because we hadn't. Instead the 1:50,000 scale map that we were using for navigation had both lakes incorrectly labeled. The cartographer had placed us on a nameless lake, from which were discussing whether to portage 2 kilometers south into the Beaver River or to follow the route we had plotted on our map through the two lakes named Mountaineer and Elson. We pulled out the 1:250,000 scale map and noticed that the names of the lakes didn't match the 1:50,000 scale map! So we compared the shapes of the lakes and sure enough we realized that we had already passed through Mountaineer Lake and were camping on Elson Lake. It was quite a relief. The following morning we left Elson Lake and began our 2 kilometer portage into the Beaver River.
