Jim portages the tandem canoe through a swamp The hillside that leads down to the Beaver River; cleared by a recent fire.

The portage to the Beaver River began in a dense spruce forest then opened for a short distance through a swamp (left photo) before reentering the trees. Rain began to fall when we crested the hill (right photo) but we were pleasantly surprised to see that a somewhat recent forest fire had cleared much of the land we would needed to portage down to get to the northern shore of the river.
