JULY 14, 2003: Incessant swarms of buzzing greenhead flies, temperatures soaring to 90 degrees Fahrenheit, and 2,725 meters of very difficult terrain made the portage to Hope Lake the single most difficult one-day portage our team has ever faced. The whole ordeal took nine hours ... It just ain't the type of thing you'd want to do twice! Hubbard, Wallace and Elson must have felt the same sense of relief and elation when they caught their first glimpse of Hope Lake through the spruce trees. We walked in their footsteps that day and there was more than one occassion that I said each of their names aloud, "Leonidas Hubbard, Dillon Wallace, George Elson" as I struggled under the weight of a heavy load.
TIMETABLE COMPARISON: On July 15, 1903, the Hubbard Expedition departed from the town of North West River, which at the time was a Hudson's Bay Company post referred to as Northwest River Post.
